Saint Patrick’s Day


It’s nearly Saint Patrick’s Day, the Irish national day celebrated the world over every year on the 17th of March.  What better way to celebrate it in class than with a fun, short quiz testing your student’s knowledge off all things Irish.  Separate your students into teams and set them the following questions.

1)    What is capital of the Republic of Ireland? Dublin

2)    Who is the lead singer of the Irish rock group U2? Bono

3)    What famous beer originates from there? Guinness

4)    What are the three colours on the Irish flag? Green, White and Orange

5)    What is the size of the population to the nearest million? Six

6)    Which of the following actors not Irish? b

a.    Pierce Brosnan
b.    Ewan McGregor
c.    Colin Farrell
d.    Liam Neeson

7)    How many leaves are there on a shamrock, the national symbol of Ireland? Three

8)    What currency is used? The Euro

9)    What is the official language? English

10)     Who is the patron saint? Saint Patrick

As a fun finish and to reward them for their efforts show them this famous Guinness advert and then teach them the words which comprises of passages from Moby Dick by Herman Melville.

Ahab says “I don’t care who you are, here’s to your dream”
The old sailors return to the bar. “Here’s to you, Ahab!”
